Ninh Binh - Halong Bay Inland

Two hours to the south of Hanoi lies the scenic region of Ninh Binh, known locally as Dry Halong Bay for the thrusting limestone pinnacles that adorn the landscape.

Destinations Spotlight:
The region is criss-crossed with a network of rivers that run between and, in places, through the karst peaks. One of the most popular activities in the area is to take a gentle sampan ride along one of these rivers, rowed or punted along by one of the local villagers for whom this is welcome additional income to supplement their regular farming livelihood.

Do not be put off by Ninh Binh city, which will be the likely access point to the region, as it is a modern Vietnamese town lying outside the karst region, and not especially attractive. The region is also home to a number of historical sites of interest, including the temple to the first Vietnamese Emperor Ding, and is within easy reach of Cuc Phuong National Park, where great trekking through the dense and ancient jungle is possible.

"Ninh Binh is a beautiful and relaxing spot, and very handy for Hanoi - ideal for a couple of days of leisurely cycling or messing about on the river."
