Vung Tau - Cap Saint Jacques

Vung Tau is a city in southern Vietnam. It is capital of Ba Ria Vung Tau province. Next to Ba Ria and Long Dien district, located on Vung Tau peninsula and Long Son island, Vung Tau is 125km away from Ho Chi Minh. If you look on the map, you will see this place is on a headland emerging from land. And people can enjoy beautiful sunrise and sunset on Eastern Sea.

With 140.1km² and population over 200,000 inhabitants (2007), this is the only petroleum base of Vietnam where crude oil and natural gas exploitation activities dominate the city's economy and contribute principal income to Vietnam's budget and export volume.

To tourists, Vung Tau is an interesting place because of its naturally beautiful beaches that they can’t miss when having to a chance to visit there. Back Beach (also known as Bai Sau, Thuy Van) is a famous destination for tourists. There are lots of two and three-star hotels, popular restaurants, entertainment services here that make you feel relax and comfortable totally as well as get away from depressed concerns. But sightseeing in Front Beach (Bai truoc) is really worth paying attention.

Fresh seafood in Vung Tau is quite cheap. You may have a delicious meal such as lobster, crab or fish without spending too much money. Don’t forget to bargain with street-sellers for the prices. If you are lucky and skillful, you will get it with a cheaper price than normal.

A notable monument in the city is Christ of Vung Tau, a large statue of Christ on a hilltop built by Vietnam's Catholic minority. It was completed in the early 1970s with the height of 32 m and two outstretched arms spanning 18.4 m. It is considered to be among the tallest statues of Christ in Asia. Once setting foot on this statue, you are going to spread your sight to whole city and experience the terror when being so high with strong winds.
Vung Tau also takes place many traditional festivals such as:
- Dinh Co festival: in 3 days (10 -12 of Lunar February) all days and nights.
- Nghinh Ong festival: 16 -18 Lunar August every year.

This city can be seen as the nearest beach from Ho Chi Minh city. So that people often converge here at the weekend to refresh after a hard- working period. In future, Vung Tau will have many instruction projects not only to change city’s face but also to welcome more tourists.
