THE FAMOUS MEKONG RIVER - MOTHER OF WATER
The Mekong is one of the largest and most important river systems on earth. Over the course of thousands of millennia the Mekong has shaped the landscapes that it drains, dispersing the gift of life through water, silt and fisheries without bias throughout its realm. A complex tapestry of natural, cultural and historical environments evolved around the natural bounty of the river system and today the Mekong sustains the third greatest biodiversity of all the Worlds River systems and supports the way of life of some eighty million people representing more than one hundred ethnic groupings.
Many of our tours through Vietnam take a day trip from Saigon to the province of My Tho, gateway to the Mekong. We then take a boat ride to one of the islands located in the middle of the Mekong River. On the island we visit a fruit orchard and sample some delicious fresh local produce. We take the opportunity to visit a local family's house, enjoy their hospitality and share with them some rice wine, honey tea or seasonal fruits. As the world’s most productive inland fishery the Mekong forms a critical source of protein for tens of millions of people, many of whom live on or below the poverty line and do not possess access to alternative protein sources. In recent times the current borders of China, Burma, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam were demarcated and today these nations manage the magnificent natural phenomena known as the Mekong.
Program in details:
Pick up at hotel and drive to the Mekong Delta, Vietnam's largest rice bowl. On arrival in My Tho we embark on a boat navigating around the intricate small canals in the delta region, which is a great way to observe the local lifestyle close-up and catch a view dotted by many islands.
The exciting excursion will pass the lush green vegetation before arriving at the famous Unicorn Island. Here we have opportunities to stroll around an orchard, taste many seasonal fruits and enjoy wonderful traditional music. The next stop of our trip is Ben Tre Province to visit some fascinating local industries.
After feasting on a huge lunch we return to Ho Chi Minh, stopping off along the way to see the beautiful Vinh Trang Pagoda. The trip ends after arrival in Ho Chi Minh City.
